Rewritable Optical Media is a modern format of CDs and DVDs that are capable of having the content erased and replaced similar to old tape media. Unless CDs and DVDs are rewritable formats (CD-RW or DVD-RW), the data recorded will be permanent.
When optical media was first developed, the data was recorded in bumps or pits in a thin layer of aluminum close to the top of the disc. Since this layer was enclosed in layers of protective plastic the data could not be changed.
The next development in the field of optical media was blank CD-R. With this format, data was no longer prerecorded in a layer of aluminum. Instead the data layer was made of an organic compound sensitive to burning. A laser could then selectively heat the data layer and cause a darkening discoloration. This technology revolutionized the optical media industry since users could master their own CD-R in their office or at home without any factory equipment. All that was required was a CD-R drive, which is now standard on most desktop computers. However, the limitation of ordinary blank CD-R is that it can only be duplicated once. Once the pits on the organic layer are burned, it is irreversible. A demand increased for a type of optical media that could be rerecorded several times like in the tape industry where tapes can be erased an reused.
Rewritable Optical Media So rewritable optical media (CD-RW or DVD-RW) was developed in response to the demand for the flexibility of a rewritable disc. Rewritable optical media exploits a special metallic compound that is prone to phase change, and it uses this as a data layer instead of the organic compound of blank CD-R. The laser of a CD-RW drive is able to change the pits of rewritable optical media between its solid state and crystalline state. This can be done many times and so the data on the disc can be replaced. In recent years, CD-RW and DVD-RW media and drives have become much more cost efficient so average users can benefit from this technology. We provide CD-RW and DVD-RW media.
