The next generation of optical media has arrived, and as is usually the case it has started with a PR war between two major competing formats: HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray media are a new type of high capacity media that are the same size as blank CDs and blank DVDs but much more compressed. The two formats are locked in a bitter conflict, and so far only HD-DVD players can play HD-DVDs, and only Blu-Ray players can play Blu-Ray discs, so compatibility is definitely an issue for consumers.
Blu-Ray discs have greater capacity than HD-DVDs. Single layer HD-DVDs hold up to 15GB of data, while single layer Blu-Ray discs hold up to 25GB of data. Both formats represent a major advance in optical media technology. Already there are dual layer discs available. Dual layer HD-DVDs hold 30GB of data, while dual layer Blu-Ray discs hold 50GB of data. Not only this, but both companies are working hard to develop triple and quadruple layer discs. Such rapid progress in the compression of optical media is hard to fathom, and it will greatly change the market for consumers.
In the case of video data capacity, HD-DVDs have a slight edge over Blu-Ray discs. HD-DVDs are able to capture 24 hours of video, while Blu-Ray discs are able to capture 23 hours of video. In the video game industy, HD-DVDs will be compatible with Xbox systems, while Blu-Ray discs will be compatible with PlayStation 3.
The two formats will still be developing for the next few years, and by then the industry may settle on a default format. We provide the media and recorders for both Blu-Ray discs and HD-DVDs.
