When you are quickly labeling your CDs, there is a common temptation to quickly use a marker or colored pen. After all, it takes time to design a CD label using a template and then printing it with a professional grade printer. If you’re in a hurry and just need to write a few quick words on the disc, why not just use a marker? However, you should not use markers when labeling your CDs.
The problem is that the data layer is close to the surface of the disc. It is often assumed that the data is stored near the bottom of the disc since this is where the burned portion is visible, and this is where the laser reads the data. However, the laser is reading through a large plastic layer that both protects the disc and acting as a magnifying lens. In reality, there isn’t much space between the data and the surface of the disc where prints are usually made. Markers can seep through the top of the disc and corrupt the content.
Do you need a quick method of labeling CDs?
If you need something quick that doesn’t require a lot of time or money, use a CD Titler instead. These are a very affordable and fast way to label a disc. This method is completely safe since it uses standard thermal transfer technology, and the disc will be a whole lot nicer to look at as well. The printer is small, designed to sit on your desktop, and pleasant looking.
