There are two major types of CD printers: thermal printers and inkjet printers. There are advantages to either kind.

CD Inkjet printers
print ink directly onto the disc. The benefit is that inkjet printers have always had highly photorealistic images. The inkjets have been so miniaturized that they can print within a few picoliters of resolution. Some users have complained that the CD face smudges after being printed. However, in recent years the CD face dries quickly and can be stacked without smudging.

CD Thermal printers
use a ribbon that is either directly applied to the disc through heat transfer or applied through a transfer ribbon. One of the benefits of thermal prints is that they are completely waterproof. Users have complained that thermal printers don’t produce high resolution images, but now thermal printers are on the market that have the standard 4800dpi resolution offered by inkjet printers.

CD Title printers
are an affordable alternative using a simple ribbon. The problem with high resolution printers (both inkjet and thermal) is that it takes roughly a minute per disc to print. However title printers directly print and don’t take nearly as much time or cost. These are recommended in the case when the CD image being printed consists of simple logos or graphics.
