» CD/DVD Duplication vs. CD/DVD Replication
|
This article will describe the difference between CD/DVD duplication and CD/DVD replication and explain the benefits of each.
CD/DVD duplication is the process of copying data from a master disc to blank CD-R or DVD-R discs. Blank CD-R/DVD-R discs are manufactured blank, and the data is “burned” into an organic dye layer using an optical laser in a recording drive. CD/DVD duplication is generally intended for smaller runs (fewer than a couple thousand discs).
An advantage of duplication is that the job can be completed more quickly. Small duplication facilities are usually able to copy hundreds of discs in a matter of hours. Replication takes a bit longer since it requires a complex glass mastering process. Replication plants will not generally accept smaller quantities of discs unless they are outsourced through a trusted duplication facility. Similarly, duplication plants are unlikely to accept a job that’s too large for their output capacity unless they are given adequate time to fulfill the job.
CD/DVD replication is the process of creating CD-ROM/DVD-ROM with the data already on the discs before they are coated and protected. The data is stamped into an aluminum layer, and then the disc is covered with protective layers and plastic.
Replication generally results in a higher quality disc. Especially in the case of audio/video discs in which quality is most crucial, replicated discs test better in quality. The only exception is in the case of premium grade CD-R/DVD-R discs (such as Taiyo Yuden) which test just as well as replicated discs.
Cost per disc is generally a bit lower with replicated discs; however plants add glass mastering fees so that the total job may cost more replicated than duplicated.
